Mahan Air, a major Iranian carrier, has successfully operated a direct civilian flight between Tehran and Sana’a, capital of war-torn Yemen. According to Flightradar24 data, an Airbus A340-300 aircraft, registered with Mahan Air and flying under the callsign IRM-1199/IRM-1998, carried out the historic journey on July 2-3, marking the first direct civilian flight between the two capitals since 2015.
This development comes as a significant boost to diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the region. Flights between the two cities were suspended following a Houthi rebel takeover in Yemen in 2015 and a subsequent international coalition-led intervention to quell the insurgency. The restoration of civilian air links may pave the way for increased diplomatic engagement and possible negotiations to bring stability to Yemen.
Flightradar24, a global flight-tracking service, has confirmed that the Mahan Air Airbus A340-300 departed Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport on July 2 and arrived at Sana’a’s International Airport a few hours later, without any reported incidents. The aircraft then took off from Sana’a on July 3 and landed back in Tehran, marking the successful completion of the inaugural direct civilian flights between the two cities.
Iran and Yemen enjoy historically close ties, driven by ethnic and cultural affinity. The restoration of direct flights between the two countries is seen as a significant confidence-building measure that could help foster trust and cooperation towards resolving the ongoing conflict in Yemen.
While the move is being seen as a positive step, observers remain cautious, noting that Yemen’s ongoing civil war continues to pose significant obstacles to sustained diplomacy and a comprehensive peace agreement. Nonetheless, the resumption of direct flights is regarded as a crucial step towards normalizing relations between Iran and Yemen and may ultimately contribute to the search for a lasting solution to the conflict in Yemen.
The restoration of direct flights is a testament to the resilience and determination of the people of Yemen to rebuild and recover from one of the world’s most destructive conflicts. The initiative also highlights the critical role that diplomatic and economic engagement can play in facilitating dialogue and fostering cooperation towards achieving a more stable and peaceful Middle East.
