ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN – In a major development for the country’s energy infrastructure, the government of Pakistan has greenlit the construction of the 435-kilometer Lahore-Peshawar White Oil Pipeline. According to a recent report by Nikkei Asia, this significant project will complete a critical link in the fuel corridor connecting Karachi to Peshawar, thereby expanding Pakistan’s refined fuel pipeline network to nearly 1,600 kilometers.
The Lahore-Peshawar White Oil Pipeline, valued at $270 million, is touted as a strategic investment aimed at facilitating the transportation of fuel from Karachi and domestic refineries to northern Pakistan entirely through pipeline. The project is expected to significantly improve the logistics of fuel distribution across the country, reducing reliance on road transport and subsequently minimizing the risks associated with fuel theft and smuggling.
Initially, the pipeline is designed to transport 7 million tons of fuel annually, but this capacity will increase to 10 million tons as the demand for fuel continues to grow. With this development, petroleum products imported through the country’s largest port in Karachi can now be efficiently piped to northern regions, including the federally administrated tribal areas.
A consortium comprising Pakistani state-owned entities, including Pakistan State Oil and Frontier Works Organization, as well as international partners such as Azerbaijan’s SOCAR and Inter-State Gas Systems, will oversee the development and construction of the pipeline. The consortium’s involvement is expected to bring valuable expertise and global best practices to the project, ensuring its successful completion.
Pakistan’s fuel pipeline network currently spans approximately 1,160 kilometers, and the addition of the 435-kilometer Lahore-Peshawar pipeline will not only increase the total length but also enhance the network’s robustness and efficiency. This infrastructure upgrade is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s energy sector, reducing transportation costs and enabling more reliable delivery of petroleum products to consumers.
