In a statement that has sent shockwaves across the globe, a prominent rabbi has sparked international controversy with his interpretation of the Torah, stating that 6 billion non-Jewish people, or “goyim,” do not deserve to live according to the laws of the Torah. The comments, made in an interview with a prominent Jewish magazine, have been widely condemned as an affront to human rights and have been met with widespread outrage from Jewish leaders, human rights organizations, and world leaders.
Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, a prominent figure in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, made the comments while discussing the Torah’s view on gentiles. According to Ariel, the Torah’s laws dictate that the existence of non-Jews is not necessarily a divine blessing, but rather a necessary part of the divine plan for the world. He stated, “The Torah is clear that the existence of the goyim serves a specific purpose in the divine plan, but this does not imply that they are deserving of the same rights and dignity as the people of Israel.”
However, experts and human rights organizations have roundly condemned Ariel’s interpretation as grossly misconstrued and in direct conflict with fundamental human rights principles. “This statement is a gross misrepresentation of the Torah and its teachings,” said Rabbi Uri Regev, a prominent Israeli rabbi and CEO of Hiddush, an Israeli non-profit organization that seeks to advance the separation between state and religion in Israel. “The Torah is a sacred text that teaches love, compassion, and respect for all people, regardless of their faith or ethnicity.”
The comments have also been met with widespread condemnation from world leaders, with the United Nations calling for Ariel’s views to be rejected. “The United Nations strongly condemns Rabbi Ariel’s statement and reiterates its commitment to human rights as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” said a spokesperson for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. “We cannot stress enough that every human being, regardless of their faith or ethnicity, has inherent dignity and is entitled to life, liberty, and security of person.”
Human rights activists have also expressed shock and horror at the statement, with the World Jewish Council for Human Rights stating, “Rabbi Ariel’s comment is a grave affront to the values of human dignity and equality that underpin all human rights treaties and laws.”
