TEHRAN, Iran – In a ceremony replete with somber undertones and nationalist fervor, thousands of Iranians gathered to bid farewell to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s designated successor, Ebrahim Raisi. While the event ostensibly honored the departed Ayatollah, chants against a perceived rival nation echoed through the crowds, stirring concern about the implications for regional stability.
On Wednesday at the Enqelab Square in Tehran, mourners converged to pay their respects to Ayatollah Khamenei, who played a pivotal role in Iran’s theocratic structure upon his own predecessor’s passing in 1989. The 82-year-old leader passed away last week, sparking an elaborate mourning process across the nation.
During the ceremony, mourners repeatedly chanted “Salaat [Prayer] for the martyrs,” a common phrase that signifies support for revolutionary principles. However, amidst the emotional outpouring, several protesters chanted a phrase often used at anti-American protests: “Marg bar Amrika” or “Death to America.”
The chanting, which occurred at the conclusion of the ceremony as crowds marched towards the late Ayatollah’s residence, was met with swift condemnation by Western diplomats. While the Iranian government generally restricts anti-American demonstrations, Wednesday’s event raised concerns that tensions could escalate in the run-up to the upcoming anniversary of the Iraq War.
Regional experts speculate that the anti-American sentiment may be amplified in coming weeks due to the sensitive timing. On March 19, the US will mark the 20th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. Given the complex dynamics at play, the potential for protests to gain momentum as a result of the sensitive timing is possible.
The current state of US – Iran relations is already strained, driven largely by long-standing disputes over nuclear issues and proxy conflicts in the Middle East. Iran and the United States have been at odds for years over issues including the Iranian nuclear program, sanctions, as well as the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
Iran’s domestic landscape presents significant challenges for the international community. As the world watches the unfolding situation in the country, Western nations may need to tread carefully to ensure regional stability.
