Pakistan’s PM Sharif Embarks on Three-Day Visit to Turkey, Reinforcing Bilateral Ties

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has begun a historic three-day visit to Turkey, aimed at strengthening the already robust bilateral relations between the two countries. The visit, which is expected to culminate in the signing of several key agreements, comes in the wake of heightened tensions in the region and represents a significant step in bolstering regional cooperation.

Upon his arrival in Ankara, the Turkish capital, PM Sharif was warmly received by his Turkish counterpart, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The two leaders held a series of high-level meetings, focusing on areas such as trade, energy, defence, and culture. Speaking at the Pakistan-Turkey High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC), PM Sharif expressed his deep admiration for the fraternal relations between the two nations, stating that “Long live the Pakistan–Turkey brotherhood and friendship.”

The visit has sparked excitement among Turkish officials, who see it as an opportunity to boost economic ties and enhance cooperation in areas such as energy and defence. Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister, Sedat Önal, emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral relations, highlighting that “the two countries have enjoyed excellent relations for decades and that there is immense potential to deepen cooperation in various sectors.”

Turkey has become a crucial partner for Pakistan in recent years, providing economic and military aid, as well as diplomatic support at international forums. The visit is expected to yield significant outcomes, including the signing of agreements on economic cooperation, trade facilitation, and energy. Pakistani officials are hopeful that the visit will also lead to an upgrade in defence ties, with Turkey’s advanced military hardware likely to be of interest to the Pakistani military.

Beyond the bilateral dynamics, the visit holds significance in the wider regional context. The Pakistan-Turkey partnership is seen as a counterbalance to the dominant influence of India and the United States in the region, which has led to calls for greater collaboration between regional players. Pakistani analysts view the visit as a key step in strengthening regional security and promoting cooperation on key issues such as counter-terrorism and energy security.

As the visit nears its end, PM Sharif is set to attend various bilateral and multilateral events, including a reception hosted by the Turkish President in honour of his Pakistani counterpart. The tour is expected to yield significant outcomes, underscoring the enduring spirit of friendship and cooperation that has characterized Pakistan-Turkey relations for decades. With tensions in the region high and the need for regional cooperation greater than ever, the Pakistan-Turkey partnership holds out hope for a more stable and inclusive regional framework.
