Lebanon Army Confirms Investigation into Damour Blast, Downplays Rumors of Explosive Device

Beirut, Lebanon – In a move aimed at allaying public fears, the Lebanese Army has announced that its investigation into a recent explosion in Damour, a coastal town in Mount Lebanon governorate, has yielded evidence of a minor accident rather than a deliberate act. The incident, which drew widespread attention and speculation regarding its cause, appears to have had a negligible impact on the surrounding community.

According to official statements, a team of experts from the Lebanese Army, in collaboration with civil authorities and the Lebanese Mine Action Center (LMAC), examined the scene and gathered evidence that supports the notion that the blast was caused by an electrical short-circuit. The investigation involved meticulous inspection of the site, review of witness accounts, and analysis of debris.

“The initial information suggested that the explosion might have been triggered by a device of some sort,” declared a high-ranking Ministry of Defense official from Beirut. “However, our expert team discovered that the explosion stemmed from an electrical fault, which resulted in a minor fire. We have been working closely with the local authorities to determine the root cause and implement necessary safety measures.”

The Army’s findings have largely allayed concerns that a more sinister event, possibly tied to ongoing civil unrest or terrorist activity, had occurred in Damour. However, officials acknowledged that an exhaustive review of the incident, including forensic analysis of the site, remains ongoing.

Lebanon has faced rising tensions in recent years, particularly in the wake of a crippling economic downturn and a growing influence of extremist groups in some regions. In view of these challenges, the authorities have taken steps to maintain public order and security.

“Security is our top priority,” said a Beirut-based Ministry of Defense spokesperson. “That’s why we take all incidents, no matter how minor they may seem, very seriously. We are constantly reassessing our strategies to address security concerns effectively and keep our citizens safe.”

In Damour, residents seemed to be more concerned with the immediate aftermath of the explosion rather than the alleged cause. Local business owners and residents reported that the explosion caused minimal damage and there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities.

In a joint statement, Damour’s Mayor and local authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and assured residents that the local administration and the authorities are committed to their safety.

“Damour is a tranquil and peaceful environment, and we are not going to allow any event, no matter how minor, to tarnish its image,” the joint statement stressed. “Our top priority remains our safety and the preservation of public order.”
