Washington D.C. – The United States Army has announced that a unit will be named after a young medic who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in a combat zone. The move comes as a tribute to the medic’s bravery and selflessness, as well as a reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and their families.
Private First Class (PFC) James “Hawk” Wilson, a 22-year-old medic from California, was killed in action in October 2022 while providing lifesaving medical aid to wounded comrades in a remote area of Afghanistan. Despite being under heavy fire, PFC Wilson continued to provide medical care to his fellow soldiers, ultimately giving his life to save others.
The PFC Wilson Medical Unit, which will be composed of approximately 20 medics and support staff, will be established at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and will be responsible for providing medical training and support to deployed units. The unit will serve as a testament to PFC Wilson’s courage and his commitment to serving his country and his fellow soldiers.
According to sources within the Army, the decision to name a unit after PFC Wilson was made in recognition of his “extraordinary heroism and selfless service.” The unit’s naming ceremony is expected to take place later this year, with PFC Wilson’s family and fellow soldiers in attendance.
PFC Wilson’s bravery and sacrifice have been widely recognized, with numerous awards and decorations bestowed upon him posthumously. These include the Medal of Valor, the Bronze Star Medal with Valor device, and the Purple Heart. His sacrifice has also been honored by the US Congress, which passed a resolution in his memory in November 2022.
The PFC Wilson Medical Unit is expected to play a critical role in supporting the Army’s medical operations, providing critical care training and support to deployed units. The unit will also serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and their families, and will continue to inspire future generations of soldiers to follow in PFC Wilson’s footsteps.
The US Army has stated that the PFC Wilson Medical Unit will be a “living legacy” to the young medic’s memory, and will serve as a reminder of the importance of the work that medics do on the front lines. The Army has also expressed its gratitude to PFC Wilson’s family for their continued support and bravery in the face of tragedy.
