Tehran, Iran – In a significant indicator of the city’s preparation for the upcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations, the Tehran metro network recorded an unprecedented number of trips yesterday. According to figures released by the Tehran Urban and Suburban Railway Company, from 5:30 PM on Monday to 7:00 AM this morning, a staggering 7,141,212 trips were recorded on the metro network heading towards the city’s central prayer hall.
When adjusted for the average capacity of an Iranian metro car, which can accommodate around 550 people, the actual number of individuals using the metro for this particular purpose is estimated to be significantly higher. Based on this calculation, it is estimated that an astonishing 12,935,384 people utilized the Tehran metro network for this occasion alone.
This remarkable figure highlights the overwhelming reliance of Tehran’s residents on public transportation, particularly during large-scale ceremonies and events. Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, is traditionally a time for family gatherings, feasting, and communal prayers. The massive influx of people to the city’s prayer hall underscores the significance of this occasion in Iranian culture.
The high number of metro trips also points to the need for enhanced public transportation infrastructure in Iran’s capital city. While the current system appears to be capable of accommodating the surge in demand, such record-breaking passenger numbers may strain the system’s resources and necessitate further investment in upgrading the metro network.
Tehran’s mayor, Alireza Zakani, has acknowledged the challenges posed by large-scale events on the city’s infrastructure. He has pledged to work with the Urban and Suburban Railway Company to ensure that the metro network is adequately prepared for future events of this nature.
As Tehran welcomes its residents and visitors alike ahead of the Eid al-Fitr celebrations, the remarkable figure of 7,141,212 metro trips serves as a testament to the city’s resilience and ability to accommodate large crowds. However, it also underscores the importance of planning and infrastructure investment to meet the ever-growing demands on Tehran’s public transportation system.
