
In a significant development, the United States Air Force and Navy have announced a revolutionary breakthrough in Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) technology. The current longest-range BVRAAMs in the US Air Force and Navy arsenal are the AIM-120D3 “AMRAAM”, which has a maximum range of up to 180 kilometers and a top speed of Mach 4 (approximately 4,900 kilometers per hour). Another notable missile is the AIM-174 “Gunslinger”, an air-launched version of the RIM-174 Standard Extended Range Active Missile (ERAM), also known as the Standard Missile 6 (SM-6), with a range of 400 kilometers and a top speed of Mach 3.5 (approximately 4,300 kilometers per hour).
Further advancements are also being made with the AIM-260 “JATM”, which is still under testing. Estimates suggest that this missile is capable of reaching ranges exceeding 200 kilometers and achieving a top burnout speed of Mach 5 (approximately 6,100 kilometers per hour).
The newly developed missile, whose specifications have not been publicly disclosed, has reportedly pushed the boundaries of BVRAAM technology, exceeding the performance capabilities of its predecessors.
