Morocco’s Judicial Police (Direction Générale de la Surveillance du Territoire, DGST, under the leadership of the Central Bureau for the Judiciary Investigation, BCIJ) announced a significant counterterrorism operation that led to the arrest of ten individuals with alleged affiliations to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The arrests took place across multiple cities in Morocco, including Agadir, Casablanca, and Tetouan, as part of a broader effort to counter ISIS’s growing presence in the Sahel region.
According to official sources, the BCIJ conducted extensive raids and investigations, uncovering evidence of a highly developed terror plot orchestrated by ISIS operatives in the Sahel. The suspects, aged between 22 and 40 years old, were reportedly in possession of a range of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), materials for manufacturing further explosives, and a modified 4×4 vehicle rigged as a potential vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED).
Notably, the seized materials included pledges of allegiance to ISIS, instruction manuals guiding the suspects on how to carry out local attacks, and advice discouraging them from traveling abroad to join the terrorist organization. Moroccan authorities interpreted this discovery as a deliberate attempt by ISIS to adapt its tactics and expand its influence in the region by promoting local recruitment and autonomous operations.
The success of the BCIJ operation can be seen as a significant blow to ISIS’s efforts to spread its influence in North Africa. Moroccan authorities have long been engaged in a delicate balance of cooperation and vigilance in the face of ongoing terrorist threats. The country’s robust counterterrorism strategies have been widely recognized by international partners, which have led to improved intelligence sharing and collaborative efforts.
The arrested suspects will face charges related to their alleged involvement in terrorist activities, including conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism, membership in a terrorist organization, and possession of explosives. Moroccan courts have a reputation for handling such cases with seriousness and efficiency, ensuring that those found guilty face the full weight of the law.
While this operation is a notable success for Moroccan counterterrorism efforts, it serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing dangers posed by terrorist organizations like ISIS. The BCIJ and its partners will need to remain vigilant in the face of these threats, as the Sahel region continues to be a hub of terrorist activity.
