PHILIPPINES CONDEMNS CHINA’S BALLISTIC MISSILE TEST, CALLS IT “RECKLESS DISPLAY OF MILITARY POWER”

Manila, Philippines – The Philippines Department of National Defense has issued a stern condemnation of China’s recent ballistic missile test in the South Pacific, labeling the event as a “reckless display of military power” and an affront to regional stability.

The statement, released on Tuesday, expressed deep concern over the implications of the missile test, which it deemed serves no peaceful purpose and represents a calculated act of taunting and provocation against countries that reject China’s “illegal expansionism and coercive conduct.” The Philippines, along with numerous other Pacific nations, has been vocal in its opposition to Beijing’s increasingly assertive claims in the region.

The tensions between the Philippines and China have been ongoing for several years, with numerous diplomatic incidents and high-profile disagreements over issues such as maritime boundaries and natural resources. The latest missile test has only added to the existing strain in their relationship, with the Philippine government accusing China of ignoring regional norms and international law.

“Their actions demonstrate a callous disregard for the well-being and security of smaller Pacific nations, as well as the fragile environmental balance of our shared ecosystems,” a Department of National Defense spokesperson said in a statement. “We urge China to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomacy over aggression, as a lasting resolution to these issues will only be achieved through sustained dialogue and collaborative effort.”

Regional observers have expressed concern over the potential implications of China’s ballistic missile test, which some have interpreted as a veiled warning to rival nations that resist its expansionist ambitions. The test has also sparked widespread condemnation from international organizations and governments worldwide, including the United States, Japan, and Australia.

The Philippines has long been at odds with China over its claims in the South China Sea, with the two nations engaging in a number of high-profile disputes over island territories and fishing rights. The country has taken a firm stance against Beijing’s increasing military presence in the region, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently announcing plans to modernize the Philippines’ military and upgrade its defense capabilities.

In light of the latest missile test, the Department of National Defense has warned that the Philippines is prepared to take all necessary measures to protect its national interests, while also calling on China to engage in a constructive dialogue to resolve the region’s pressing issues.
