Anéfis Under Siege: Russia’s Africa Corps and Malian Troops Withstand JNIM/FLA Assault

Clashes between Russian-backed Malian forces and militants affiliated with Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM) and the Front de Libération du Macina (FLA) continue to intensify in the northwestern Mali town of Anéfis, entering its fourth day. The situation remains dire, with the defenders facing near-constant bombardment and a severe humanitarian crisis unfolding.

Malian troops and Russia’s Africa Corps, which has pledged support to Mali’s beleaguered government, are fighting to maintain their stronghold on the strategic town. The Russian contingent, established to counter the growing threat of extremist groups in the region, has reportedly withstood intense shelling and drone strikes targeting key infrastructure such as water tanks, communication antennas, and armored vehicles.

The FLA has claimed that Russian forces sought to negotiate a safe-passage agreement, akin to the one granted to the fighters in Kidal. However, the Russian side reportedly rejected the proposal, citing allegations of non-compliance with earlier agreements to withdraw from northern Mali. Sources suggest that some troops attempting to surrender were allegedly killed before they could escape, though this information remains unverified.

Meanwhile, Russia-backed forces and the Malian Air Force continue to launch retaliatory strikes against JNIM/FLA positions in and around Anéfis. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) including fixed-wing and quadcopter drones are being employed in support of these operations, with recent engagements employing the Geran-2 drone, a relatively new addition to the Africa Corps arsenal.

As the standoff continues, aid convoys attempting to reach the besieged town have been met with failure, leading to growing concerns about the dire humanitarian situation inside Anéfis. The Gao-based relief convoy, tasked with delivering much-needed supplies to the besieged population, has been unable to break through JNIM/FLA roadblocks, exacerbating the fears of thirst, starvation, and potential humanitarian catastrophe.

In the midst of this unfolding crisis, international attention has been drawn to the conflict, sparking calls for a negotiated resolution that prioritizes the safety and well-being of civilians. While the fate of Anéfis and its defenders hangs in the balance, the humanitarian situation and the regional implications of this conflict will be closely watched.
