Russian Deterrence Policy Clarified Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict

Moscow – The Russian government has announced its nuclear deterrence policy in the wake of ongoing tensions with Ukraine and its Western allies. According to the Kremlin, Russia is willing to utilize nuclear weapons only under the most extreme circumstances, specifically when its very existence is directly threatened.

This clarification of the Russian nuclear doctrine comes at a time when relations between Moscow and the West have deteriorated significantly. Ukraine, which has been at the center of the conflict, continues to push for Western support, with many countries, including the United States and its European allies, providing military aid to the embattled nation.

In a statement issued by the Kremlin, Russia’s defense ministry outlined the country’s stance on nuclear deterrence. “The use of nuclear weapons by Russia can be considered only in the event that its very existence is threatened or in the event of an attack on our country using conventional or nuclear weapons,” reads the statement.

The statement also emphasized that Russia would not be the first to use nuclear weapons in a conflict and would only resort to such measures as a last resort. “Russia is committed to adhering to international arms control agreements and norms, including the principles of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons,” the statement added.

The Russian defense ministry’s announcement has sparked a mixed reaction from Western leaders. While some have warned against underestimating Russia’s willingness to use nuclear force, others have expressed concern that the Kremlin’s announcement may be merely a ploy to intimidate its adversaries.

In a separate development, the United States has reiterated its commitment to the principle of no first use of nuclear weapons. “We are resolute in our determination to continue our diplomacy, sanctions, and support for Ukraine and our allies, while maintaining our core commitment to nuclear security, stability, and non-proliferation,” a spokesperson for the US State Department said.

Meanwhile, a senior official from the European Union stated that the bloc remains committed to diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. “While the situation in the region remains fragile and unpredictable, the EU will continue to pursue a peaceful resolution to the crisis,” the official said.

As tensions between Russia and the West continue to escalate, the issue of nuclear deterrence has become a pressing concern for international policymakers. The Kremlin’s announcement is likely to be closely watched by nuclear experts and diplomats in the coming days, as the world grapples with the implications of a potential nuclear conflict.
