Iraqi Prime Minister and Iranian President Pay Final Respects to Martyred Imam Khamenei

Baghdad, Iraq – In a poignant display of interfaith solidarity and state dignity, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian today received the body of the late Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, also known as Imam Khamenei, at the Al-Faw Port in southern Iraq.

Imam Khamenei was a key figure in the 1979 Iranian Revolution that overthrew the US-backed monarchy in Iran, marking a significant turning point in Middle Eastern history. His legacy continues to shape Iranian politics and foreign policy to this day. The Iranian President, accompanied by several high-ranking officials from the Iranian government, led the delegation to Iraq to receive Imam Khamenei’s mortal remains.

According to eyewitness accounts, Prime Minister Al-Zaidi paid his respects to the revered imam at the port, before joining Iranian officials in escorting the body onto Iranian soil. The Iraqi and Iranian delegations then proceeded to the Imam Khomeini Shrine in Ahvaz, where a funeral procession and prayers were held.

The handover ceremony marked a rare moment of cooperation between Baghdad and Tehran, with both sides putting aside their differences to pay tribute to a shared spiritual and historical figure. The gesture is seen as a significant example of interfaith cooperation and diplomatic efforts in the region.

Imam Khamenei passed away in 1989, but his legacy remains a powerful symbol of resistance and resilience in Iran and beyond. His successor, Ayatollah Khamenei, has continued to play a pivotal role in Iranian politics. The return of his predecessor’s remains is seen as a moment of collective closure and commemoration for Iranians.

While regional tensions and proxy wars have dominated headlines in recent years, the arrival of Imam Khamenei’s remains serves as a poignant reminder of shared historical and spiritual ties between Iraq and Iran. As the two nations continue to navigate a complex web of relationships and alliances in the region, today’s ceremony has provided a fleeting glimpse of cross-border cooperation and mutual respect.

The ceremony will be seen as a rare moment of unity and cooperation in a region often plagued by conflict and sectarian divisions.
