Polish President Advocates for Permanent US Military Base in Poland at NATO Summit

Polish President Andrzej Duda has underscored the importance of strengthening NATO’s presence in Central Eastern Europe, calling for the establishment of a permanent US military camp in Poland. This call to action came during the two-day NATO summit currently underway in Ankara, Turkey.

At a press conference held on the sidelines of the summit, President Duda expressed his desire to see a more sustained presence of American troops in Poland. He noted that nearly 10,000 American soldiers are currently stationed in the country, and hinted at his desire to see this number become a permanent fixture.

“We have almost 10,000 American soldiers in Poland,” he said. “We would like to set up the permanent camp – a permanent camp for American soldiers in Poland.”

President Duda emphasized the strategic importance of a permanent US military presence in Poland, arguing that it would serve as a deterrent to potential regional threats. He also stressed the value of cooperation between Polish and American soldiers, suggesting that together, they would be able to more effectively secure Central Eastern Europe and the borders of the NATO alliance.

“And I’m sure that American soldiers in Poland will stay, and together with Polish soldiers will secure Central Eastern Europe and the borders of NATO,” he said.

The Polish president’s comments come at a time when concerns about Russia’s military activities in Eastern Ukraine are running high. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to increased tensions between Russia and NATO, and has raised concerns about the security of NATO’s Eastern flank.

President Duda’s call for a permanent US military base in Poland is seen as a significant step in bolstering NATO’s military presence in the region. It remains to be seen whether this initiative will gain traction with other NATO member states, however.

The NATO summit currently underway in Ankara is expected to focus on a range of issues, including regional security, defense spending, and cooperation among member states. With tensions between Russia and NATO running high, the summit is likely to be marked by a sense of heightened tension and urgency.

Poland has long been a strong advocate for a more significant NATO presence in Central Eastern Europe, and has been at the forefront of efforts to strengthen the alliance’s military capabilities in the region. The establishment of a permanent US military base in Poland would be a significant step in this direction, and would likely be seen as a major coup for the Polish president.
