In a scathing rebuke, former US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of consistently violating a key nuclear agreement and of engaging in a litany of destructive and inhumane activities.
Speaking from a public platform, Trump declared: ‘They violate the agreement every day. They lie, they cheat. They kill people.’ The comments were seen as an escalation of tensions between Washington and Tehran, which have been high since Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018.
The JCPOA was a landmark agreement reached in 2015 between the US, Iran, and other world powers aimed at constraining Iran’s ability to develop nuclear warheads in exchange for relief from crippling economic sanctions. Critics of Iran argue that Tehran has since flouted its obligations under the deal, which includes strict limits on uranium enrichment, the production of heavy water, and the operation of centrifuges.
Trump’s comments came amid growing concerns about the potential resumption of Iranian nuclear activities and reports of the country’s military intervention in Syria and Iraq, where it has supported Shia militias that have perpetrated human rights abuses against Sunni civilians.
Iran has consistently maintained that its activities are legitimate and in line with the agreement, but Trump insisted that Tehran was ‘not honest’ about its intentions. ‘They lie, they cheat, they kill people,’ he repeated in his remarks. ‘They’re a very bad actor.’
The Iranian government has not responded publicly to Trump’s comments, but it has frequently complained about US policies in the Middle East, including Washington’s support for Israeli military actions in Gaza and its continued military presence in Iraq.
Experts on the Middle East region warn that Trump’s remarks could exacerbate deteriorating relations between the US and Iran and increase the risk of military conflict. They caution that both countries have legitimate security concerns, including the threat posed by Iran to its neighbors and the risk of Iranian military action against US interests in the region.
As a former president with significant experience in foreign policy, Trump’s comments carry weight in diplomatic circles. However, they also raise questions about the effectiveness of Washington’s approach to engaging with Tehran, which many view as more complicated than the former president’s rhetoric suggests.
US policymakers and experts have called for increased diplomatic efforts to address concerns about Iran’s behavior, but Trump’s comments suggest that this may not be a priority for Washington at present.
