Morocco Targets IS Sahel Affiliate with Second Disruption Operation in 2026

Moroccan authorities have announced the disruption of an attack cell linked to the Islamic State (IS) Sahel Province (ISSP), the second such operation in 2026. This move underscores the North African country’s ongoing efforts to counter the spread of IS influence and mitigate its external operations in the region.

According to reports, a team of Moroccan security services identified and apprehended 10 suspects across seven cities, who were allegedly receiving instructions directly from ISSP. Following the suspects’ detention, authorities conducted searches that uncovered a cache of weapons, bomb-making material, and a modified car.

This is not the first time Morocco has disrupted IS-linked cells since 2023. Intelligence suggests that many of these cells are linked to ISSP and have been operating across both Morocco and Spain. The existence of these networks highlights IS’s attempts to utilize Morocco as a hub for foreign fighter and external operations support, serving as a conduit to link its African affiliates and European territories.

A recent example of such a cell was dismantled in March 2026, which had a member operating in Mallorca who was allegedly planning an attack. Similarly, multiple cells have been found to have members who were providing financial and logistical support to IS’s African provinces.

Critical Threats, a leading terrorism analytics firm, has highlighted the critical role of IS recruiters and facilitators in establishing foreign fighter corridors between Europe and the Sahel as early as 2023. This has enabled the group to mobilize operatives and resources across the region.

While the IS networks have been successful in establishing themselves across Morocco and Spain, their logistical functions and financial support systems remain a significant concern for regional authorities. Morocco’s recent efforts to disrupt IS attack cells demonstrate its determination to maintain domestic security and prevent the spread of extremist ideologies.

As IS’s presence continues to pose a threat to regional stability, Morocco’s proactive approach to counter-terrorism will likely remain a crucial component in the international effort to contain the group’s influence.
