TEHRAN, IRAN – The Iranian Railway Company has announced the temporary suspension of train services between Tehran and Mashhad, amidst ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States. The decision was made in response to recent US military actions targeting Iranian interests.
According to sources, the Iranian Railway Company cited “operational and security reasons” for the suspension of train services on the vital Tehran-Mashhad route. A statement released by the company revealed that “the decision was made to prioritize passenger safety and prevent any disruptions to the country’s rail network.”
The suspension of train services comes as tensions between Iran and the US escalate following a series of targeted drone strikes against Iranian military assets. On June 21, US forces launched a drone strike in eastern Syria targeting Iranian-backed militias, prompting Iran to retaliate with ballistic missile attacks on US bases in Iraq.
The Iranian Railway Company’s decision to suspend train services is seen as a response to the heightened security risks faced by rail passengers in the wake of the US attacks. The company has assured passengers that it is working closely with the Iranian Ministry of Defense to assess the situation and restore train services as soon as possible.
The Tehran-Mashhad train route is one of Iran’s busiest and most critical rail corridors, connecting the capital city to the country’s second-largest city in the northeastern province of Razavi Khorasan. The suspension of train services has resulted in significant disruptions to passenger travel and trade between the two cities.
Travelers who had planned to use the Tehran-Mashhad train service have been advised to seek alternative modes of transportation or adjust their travel plans accordingly. Freight trains have also been diverted to alternative routes, resulting in delays and disruptions to rail cargo services.
The suspension of train services on the Tehran-Mashhad route has underscored the sensitive nature of the US-Iran standoff. As tensions remain high, the Iranian Railway Company has emphasized the importance of prioritizing passenger safety and security above all other considerations.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Iranian Railway Company urged passengers to exercise caution and patience in the coming days, stating that “the company will continue to work closely with relevant authorities to ensure the safe restoration of train services on the Tehran-Mashhad route.”
