Beirut, Lebanon – The Lebanese government is intensifying efforts to solidify the recent ceasefire in the conflict-ridden areas between Lebanon and Israel, amidst growing pressure on Israel to adhere to the terms of the framework agreement.
In a high-level meeting with United States Ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa, Lebanese President Michele Aoun stressed the need to maintain the ceasefire and urged the international community to exert pressure on Israel to cease its military operations. Aoun emphasized that Israel should honor its commitments under the framework agreement, refrain from further shelling, and halt its demolitions and land-clearing activities in occupied towns and villages.
President Aoun emphasized that Israeli actions, which include the destruction of homes and infrastructure in occupied areas, are exacerbating the humanitarian situation on the ground. He called on the international community, particularly the United States, to intervene and ensure that Israel complies with the agreement terms. This, according to the President, would create a conducive environment for the agreement’s successful implementation and pave the way for sustained peace.
The framework agreement, negotiated in recent months, aims to address longstanding issues between Lebanon and Israel, including border demarcation, resource sharing, and security concerns. The agreement’s success hinges on Israel’s commitment to its terms, which include a cessation of hostilities and the return of occupied territories to their rightful owners.
Ambassador Issa expressed the United States’ commitment to promoting a peaceful and stable Middle East, adding that Washington will work closely with its partners and the international community to ensure that Israel adheres to the agreement. Issa stated that Washington is aware of the humanitarian implications of Israel’s actions and will exert diplomatic pressure to persuade Israel to respect its commitments under the framework agreement.
The Lebanese President’s meeting with Ambassador Issa follows a series of diplomatic efforts by the Lebanese government to address the humanitarian situation in occupied areas. The UN Secretary General has also called for an immediate end to hostilities and for Israel to respect the ceasefire.
Lebanon’s push for solidifying the ceasefire and pressuring Israel is gaining momentum as international opinion shifts in favor of Lebanon’s position. Governments from around the world, including key players in the Middle East, have expressed concern over Israel’s actions and have urged restraint.
The Lebanese government’s call for support from the international community comes amidst growing tensions in the region, and highlights the need for sustained international pressure to ensure that Israel honors its commitments under the framework agreement.
