In a major boost to their respective naval capabilities, the UK and Netherlands have signed a £2.4 billion deal for the procurement of eight amphibious transport ships. The agreement, details of which were released earlier this week, will see each country receive four vessels, marking a significant upgrade to their amphibious fleets.
According to sources, each of the eight ships will boast impressive dimensions, measuring approximately 160 meters in length and weighing in at a staggering 15,000 tonnes. Designed to accommodate an array of military assets, including troops, vehicles, drones, and autonomous systems, the ships will also feature well docks and a helicopter platform.
The construction costs of each vessel are estimated to be around £600 million, with the UK and Netherlands set to invest in a total of four ships each. With an expected in-service date sometime in the 2030s, these cutting-edge vessels will undoubtedly play a crucial role in safeguarding regional security and facilitating amphibious operations in the years to come.
A comparison with the UK’s previous amphibious fleet refresh program, which saw the construction of four Bay-class LSD(A)s, two Albion-class LPDs, an LPH Ocean, and a PCRS Argus, highlights the significance of the new £2.4 billion deal. At 154,000 tonnes, the previous dedicated amphibious or amphibious-support shipping total dwarfs the 60,000 tonnes allocated to the UK’s new 4-ship share, indicating a shift in emphasis towards more versatile and technologically advanced vessels.
While the exact design of the new amphibious transport ships remains unclear, with speculation pointing towards either a conventional Landing Platform Dock (LPD) or a flat-top-style design, one thing is certain – the UK and Netherlands have taken a bold step forward in bolstering their naval capabilities. As they look to the future of amphibious warfare, this significant £2.4 billion investment is set to pay dividends in terms of strengthened bilateral relations, enhanced regional security, and a significant upgrade to their military capabilities.
