US Public Divided on Middle East Politics: Pew Research Poll Reveals Shifts in Support for Hamas and Israeli Government

A recent Pew Research Center poll has shed light on a complex and divided American public opinion on the Middle East, specifically regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The poll, which surveyed over 2,000 adults in the US, reveals that nearly half of all Muslims in America support Hamas, while exactly half support the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. Meanwhile, White Evangelical Protestants remain the largest demographic group backing the Israeli government.

According to the poll, 47% of Muslim Americans believe that Hamas is the best or one of the best organizations to defend the rights and interests of the Palestinian people. By contrast, an identical 50% of Muslim Americans support the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, which governs the occupied territories. This divide highlights the complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the diverse perspectives within the Muslim American community.

The poll also found that White Evangelical Protestants continue to be strong supporters of the Israeli government, with 60% expressing their backing. This is consistent with a previous poll from April 2025, which showed 58% of White Evangelicals trusting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make the right policy decisions. The unwavering support of White Evangelicals for the Israeli government underscores their strong religious and ideological affinity with the Jewish state.

In a notable shift, the majority of Jews in America hold an unfavorable opinion of the Israeli government, with 48% expressing discontent. This may be attributed to ideological reasons, as many American Jews are critical of Netanyahu’s policies and view the Israeli government as a destabilizing entity for the global Jewish community. The sentiment was echoed by former Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel in a recent speech in Tel Aviv, who cautioned that the Israeli government’s policies are exacerbating tensions and potentially undermining the global Jewish community.

The Pew Research poll highlights the need for nuanced and inclusive dialogue on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has been an enduring challenge for policymakers and international leaders. The results emphasize the complexities of public opinion within the US and the need for policymakers to engage in sensitive and informed discussions with diverse stakeholders. As the conflict remains unresolved, it is crucial to foster a deeper understanding of the perspectives of various groups, including Muslim Americans, White Evangelical Protestants, and Jewish Americans.
