TURKIC REPUBLICS’ LEADERS CONDEMN EXTREMIST VIEWS ON INTER-ETHNIC RELATIONS

Kazakhstan, 10 July 2026 – The presidents of the Turkic Republics, comprising Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan, issued a joint statement yesterday condemning extremist ideologies that promote intolerance and hatred towards people of different ethnic backgrounds. The statement was in response to an alarming rise in supremacist and nationalist movements across the region.

Speaking at a high-level meeting in Astana, the Kazakh capital, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity among the Turkic nations, urging their leaders to reject extremist ideologies that threaten the values of mutual respect and understanding.

According to sources, the joint statement emphasizes the Turkic community’s commitment to upholding the principles of tolerance, diversity, and inclusivity, which have been at the core of their historical tradition. It also underscores the imperative of combating hatred and xenophobia in all its forms, while promoting peaceful coexistence and respect among people of different ethnic and religious backgrounds.

The move comes as authorities across the region are struggling to counter increasingly divisive rhetoric and propaganda campaigns from far-right and extremist groups. These movements often exploit cultural and ethnic differences, perpetuating stereotypes and stoking animosity towards minority communities, including Muslims, Jews, Christians, and ethnic minorities such as Kurds and Uyghurs.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, Kyrgyzstan’s Sadyr Japarov, Kazakhstan’s Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and Uzbekistan’s Shavkat Mirziyoyev all attended the meeting in Astana. The joint statement reflects a unified stance against extremist ideologies and emphasizes the importance of promoting a culture of inclusion, respect, and understanding among the diverse populations of the Turkic Republics.

The statement highlights the need for leaders to take concrete actions, such as promoting media literacy, counter-narratives, and community-based initiatives that promote social cohesion and respect for diversity. The Turkic nations’ commitment to upholding universal human rights, fundamental freedoms, and democratic values is also emphasized.

Critics have hailed the statement as a significant step towards countering hate and promoting unity in the region, while others have welcomed the joint initiative as a necessary measure to address the pressing threat posed by extremist ideologies. The move is expected to have far-reaching implications for inter-state cooperation, regional security, and the development of inclusive and peaceful societies in the Turkic Republics.
