Israel Drives Tension in Lebanon With Unmanned Surveillance Flight over Beirut

Beirut, Lebanon – In a move escalating tensions in the already fragile Levant region, an Israeli Hermes 450 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), with the registration number 722, has been continuously flying over Beirut, particularly above the city’s southern suburb of Dahieh, since early morning today.

According to official sources, the Israeli reconnaissance drone has entered Lebanese airspace in contravention of UN resolutions, which ban any Israeli overflight in Lebanese territory. Local authorities have reported the incident to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and requested their intervention.

The move is being viewed with significant concern by Lebanese officials and various regional groups. They view the Israeli action as an attempt to collect intelligence and further exacerbate existing regional tensions, particularly along the Israel-Lebanon border.

Lebanon has been a longstanding point of contention between Israel and the Palestinians, who have long claimed a sovereign state in the internationally-recognized 1948 borders of the land previously known as Palestine. Israeli military incursions have historically been a major driver of violence between the two nations.

The international community has consistently urged restraint from both parties, particularly with regard to military actions that threaten regional stability. Furthermore, there exist long-standing UN resolutions aimed at preventing further aggression in the zone.

An unnamed Lebanese government official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, expressed extreme dissatisfaction with the Israeli action. ‘This reckless behavior by Israel threatens our sovereignty and the rights of our citizens,’ he said in a statement.

‘The continuous overflight of our territory, coupled with the numerous breaches of these United Nations’ resolutions, has led us to question the commitment of Israel to maintaining regional peace,’ the official noted.

The move by Israel is also likely to prompt diplomatic reactions from the international community. A spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General’s office in Beirut declined to comment, stating that they were in communication with local authorities.

Meanwhile, a representative of the Hezbollah party, speaking from the southern suburbs, stated that the actions of the Israeli drone over Dahieh were an escalation that would not go unchallenged. ‘We stand strong and ready to defend our country and its legitimate interests,’ the Hezbollah representative stated.

Tensions have been running high in the region for the past few weeks, particularly after recent clashes along the Israeli-Syrian border, where Israeli jets and artillery fire have targeted suspected positions of the Iranian-backed militias operating in the country.
