In a joint statement, the diplomatic missions of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania lodged an official protest with the Russian Foreign Ministry, firmly disputing recent claims made by Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin. According to the Baltic nations, Galuzin’s accusations that they had opened their airspace for attacks on Russia are fundamentally unfounded and lack any factual basis.
In a strongly worded statement, the three Baltic countries condemned Russia’s actions as a prime example of disinformation and propaganda, deliberately aimed at escalating tensions between the two parties. They stated that their national airspace remains a protected area and is subject to strict military regulations, ensuring the sovereignty of its territories.
Galuzin had initially alleged that the recent uptick in NATO military maneuvers near Russia’s borders had provided the Baltic states with the opportunity to facilitate attacks on Russia. This claim has been vehemently denied by the Baltic states’ respective governments, who argue that the increased NATO activity is, in fact, merely a legitimate exercise of their collective defense obligations under the NATO-Russia Founding Act.
“This is a blatant attempt by Russia to manipulate public perceptions and justify its own aggressive military actions along the European periphery,” declared a spokesperson for the Latvian Foreign Ministry. “The Baltic states will continue to stand in solidarity, upholding the principles of international law and rejecting any unfounded claims of foreign aggression.”
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg praised the collective stance taken by the Baltic states, reiterating the Alliance’s unwavering commitment to regional security.
NATO stands ready to respond to any perceived threats to its member states’ security, while also upholding diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing unnecessary escalation between nations.
The diplomatic fallout comes at a time when tensions between Russia and the West continue to simmer, with ongoing concerns over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Russia’s nuclear modernization efforts.
In light of these events, the international community can expect heightened diplomatic activity, as regional leaders strive to de-escalate tensions through continued diplomacy and crisis resolution.
