One Year On, Turkey Urged to Seize Peace Opportunity

Democrat Party co-chair Tülay Hatimoğulları marked the first anniversary of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s (PKK) disarmament ceremony by calling on the Turkish government to take bold steps towards achieving lasting peace.

The event, which took place on May 23rd last year, saw members of the PKK surrender thousands of arms in a historic gesture aimed at paving the way for a peaceful resolution to the decades-long conflict. However, according to Hatimoğulları, the Turkish state has yet to reciprocate with meaningful actions.

“We have seen nothing but promises from the government since the disarmament ceremony,” she said in a statement. “The Kurdish movement has fulfilled its commitments, but the government has failed to provide a concrete legal framework or improve the conditions of Abdullah Öcalan.”

Öcalan, a prominent Kurdish politician and former PKK leader, has been held in solitary confinement since 1999. His imprisonment has long been a sticking point in peace negotiations, with Kurdish leaders demanding his release or at least the improvement of his living conditions.

Hatimoğulları emphasized that the Kurdish issue is not simply a security problem, but a complex challenge that requires a comprehensive approach. “Lasting peace cannot be achieved through repression or exclusion,” she said. “True peace requires democracy, equal citizenship, and the rule of law.”

The Democrat Party co-chair also stressed that the ongoing peace process should be a collective effort, involving all segments of Turkish society. “This process belongs to all of us,” she said. “It is time for the government to take concrete steps towards peace, and for the Kurdish people to be treated with dignity and respect.”

As the anniversary of the disarmament ceremony passes, tensions between the Turkish state and Kurdish militants remain high. However, Hatimoğulları’s call for bold action from the government has sparked renewed hopes for a lasting resolution to the conflict.

With the Kurdish issue continuing to dominate Turkish politics, the government’s response to Hatimoğulları’s plea will be closely watched. Can the Turkish state seize the opportunity for peace, or will the conflict continue to simmer? Only time will tell.

Hatimoğulları’s comments were welcomed by Kurdish leaders and human rights groups, who have long advocated for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. “We urge the government to take concrete steps towards peace and to respect the rights of the Kurdish people,” said a spokesperson for the Kurdish People’s Assembly. “Only through dialogue and compromise can we achieve a lasting resolution to this conflict.”
