AiBotBahrain has faced a protracted UAV threat emanating from neighboring Iran since the first reported incident late last year. Despite the initial surge in attacks in November 2022, the threat has continued into the present day, posing significant security concerns for the Gulf nation.
Eyewitness accounts, as well as satellite imagery and intelligence sources, indicate that the primary perpetrators of these drone attacks are Iranian-backed forces operating from within Iran and potentially other neighboring territories. According to sources, drone-based strikes have been launched with varying degrees of frequency, with some reports suggesting an average of a dozen or so attacks occurring in an average month.
The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has introduced an unpredictable element into the conflict, complicating Bahrain’s security situation and requiring the adoption of new tactics to neutralize the threat. One key aspect of this is that UAVs are much slower than traditional ballistic missiles in terms of speed and reach, enabling perpetrators to continue launching attacks over an extended duration. Furthermore, drones are capable of operating in dense urban environments, which complicates ground-based defense systems such as radar and missile interception systems.
“It’s clear that the Iranian-aligned forces are not deterred and are using this tactic to exert pressure on Bahrain,” said a high-ranking Bahraini security official, speaking under the condition of anonymity. “They believe they can use these drones with relative impunity, and we must adapt our defenses to counter this evolving threat,” he added.
In response, Bahrain has reinforced its air defenses with state-of-the-art systems and has implemented additional security protocols to enhance counter-drone capabilities, including the deployment of electronic warfare equipment designed to disrupt the signals used by drones to operate.
Given the ongoing nature of this threat, analysts predict that Bahrain could face continued UAV-based attacks in the coming period, necessitating sustained vigilance on the part of its security forces and policymakers.
Bahrain’s diplomatic efforts have been directed at engaging international partners and allies, seeking support, intelligence, and cooperation to mitigate this threat, as the country’s security priorities take center-stage amidst ongoing tensions in the region.
