In an apparent misunderstanding or misinterpretation, Iran’s Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs has rendered the IMO’s rule “using its best efforts for the safe passage” as an instruction to attack merchant ships using drones and missiles.
According to sources close to the matter, the IMO’s original language, as stated in the Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), reads: “Every vessel shall at all times maintain a state of watchfulness as far as practicable…”. In stark contrast, Iran’s translation suggests that the use of force may be necessary to ensure a vessel’s safe passage. This drastic difference in interpretation has led many experts to question the validity of Iran’s interpretation, fearing a destabilization of global shipping routes.
“This is a cause for concern,” stated Captain James Reed, a retired naval officer and maritime expert. “If Iran’s interpretation is applied across the board, it could lead to a chaotic situation where vessels are being targeted left and right. We need to ensure that all parties understand the true meaning of this rule – which is clearly about exercising caution, not aggression.”
The IMO has since clarified that its original text meant to emphasize the use of safety protocols and best practices to maintain a vessel’s safety. “We’re shocked and disappointed that Iran’s translation has led to such an alarming interpretation,” said an IMO spokesperson. “We will continue to work with all member states to ensure that our conventions are understood and respected as intended.”
Merchant ships, which are among the most vulnerable sectors of the global economy, are already facing increased safety concerns due to rising tensions in sensitive regions. Any misinterpretation of the IMO’s code could lead to catastrophic consequences, resulting in loss of life, damage to property, and disruptions to global supply chains.
In light of this controversy, diplomatic efforts are underway to address the issue. Iran has been invited to a special meeting at the IMO to discuss its interpretation and the implications of its translation. Meanwhile, other nations are urging Tehran to revise its understanding of the code to avoid any potential conflicts at sea.
