Iran Accuses US of Undermining Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding

Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated further with the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, accusing the US of sabotaging the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). At the center of the dispute lies the 14-point agreement, which was reached between Iran, the United States, China, Russia, the European Union, and other parties to revitalize diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.

According to Mr. Baghaei, the US has consistently breached the terms of the agreement, which he described as a “crisis phase” for the MoU. Iran’s government maintains that it has remained committed to fulfilling its obligations under the agreement, only to see the US continually undermine its implementation.

Specifically, Mr. Baghaei pointed to the 60-day period outlined in the agreement as a key area of conflict. Article 5 of the MoU stipulates that a period of 60 days is provided for Iran to fulfill its commitments regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Mr. Baghaei stated that the US failed to allow the implementation of this period, effectively preventing Iran from fulfilling its end of the agreement.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman emphasized that his country has demonstrated its commitment to the agreement by refraining from breaching its obligations. In contrast, he accused the US of violating the terms on multiple occasions. This stance is echoed by Iranian officials, who see the US as the primary impediment to the successful implementation of the MoU.

The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding was signed in June 2022 as a precursor to further diplomatic efforts between Iran and the international community. The agreement has since been subject to ongoing negotiations and tensions between the parties involved.

In light of these developments, experts warn that the situation may further escalate, with implications for regional stability and global security. The Iranian-US dispute has significant implications for the Middle East geopolitical landscape, and diplomats are anxiously awaiting a resolution to these tensions.

As talks between the parties continue, it remains to be seen whether the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding can be salvaged, and whether the US and Iran can find common ground to move forward.
