DP World, one of the world’s largest port operators, announced plans to construct a new port and container terminal in Fujairah, strategically located on the UAE’s east coast. This significant development aims to diversify the country’s trade infrastructure, reduce reliance on the congested Jebel Ali port in Dubai, and bypass the critical Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway through which over one-third of the world’s seaborne oil exports pass.
According to officials, the new project is expected to allow cargo to enter the UAE without navigating the Strait of Hormuz, thereby alleviating transit issues and logistical constraints. Moreover, cargo will be transported via overland routes to the Gulf’s major markets, enhancing supply chain efficiency and competitiveness.
The initiative comes in response to the recent surge in shipping disruptions at Jebel Ali, where activity has been severely impacted. This unprecedented situation underscores the urgent need for alternative trade routes and highlights the importance of having a robust, flexible, and resilient logistics network in place.
By constructing the new port in Fujairah, DP World aims to capitalize on the region’s growing economic opportunities and increase the UAE’s role as a global trade hub. The strategic location of the new terminal will provide unparalleled access to key markets, including the GCC nations, and cater to the demands of the rapidly expanding trade sector.
The $1.1 billion Fujairah port project is expected to generate over 20,000 new jobs and inject a significant boost into the local economy. DP World’s Chairman and CEO, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, stated that the new terminal will be a game-changer for the UAE’s logistics infrastructure, emphasizing its potential to support the country’s long-term economic growth ambitions.
DP World has been operational in the UAE for over three decades, with Jebel Ali being one of its flagship ports. However, the company’s expansion plans underscore its commitment to providing innovative and reliable trade solutions, underscoring the importance of diversifying the country’s trade infrastructure.
As the global economy continues to face supply chain challenges, the UAE’s efforts to develop a more agile and resilient logistics network will undoubtedly play a vital role in maintaining its competitive edge and solidifying its position as a key player in international trade. With the Fujairah port project, DP World has firmly positioned itself at the forefront of this strategic development, reinforcing its status as a leader in the global port and terminal operations sector.
