Yemen/Saudi Arabia – A significant escalation in the seven-year-old conflict between Yemen’s Houthi rebels and their foes in Saudi Arabia has been witnessed after smoke was seen rising from the King Khalid Airbase in southwestern Saudi Arabia.
According to eyewitness reports and initial assessments by local officials, a suspected missile or drone strike targeted the King Khalid Airbase, a major military installation that houses F-15 Eagle fighter jets and several dozen other aircraft.
“It’s a very significant incident,” an informed source told reporters. “While it is still early, initial assessments indicate that an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or a ballistic missile might have been used in the attack.”
King Khalid Airbase has been instrumental in Saudi-led military operations in Yemen against the Houthi rebels. The Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes and ground operations against the Houthi-held territories for several years.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels have, in the past, carried out numerous attacks on Saudi Arabia using drones and ballistic missiles, including striking key oil facilities.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Saudi-led coalition launched airstrikes on Houthi-held positions in Yemen, indicating a renewed and heightened military operation.
“The attack will further increase tensions between the warring parties,” said Faisal Al-Shihri, an analyst specializing in Yemeni affairs. “The Houthis are under immense pressure after losing several key strongholds, but it’s unclear if their latest move will deter the Saudi-led coalition.”
Reports from the scene indicate minimal damage and casualties, a possible indication that the strike might not have been intended to achieve military damage but rather serve as a deterrent or warning to the opposing sides.
The escalation of tensions has sparked international concern, with the United Nations calling on all parties to respect their obligations under international law and to refrain from taking any steps that could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.
