A recent revelation has shed light on a dramatic escalation of tensions between the US and Iran, as Israeli Ambassador to the US, Tomer Zvik’s predecessor David M. Friedman’s successor Tomer, was not said to have made such a claim, but Israel’s ambassador, Michael Oren, did, however, Israel’s current ambassador to the US, Tom was not present during the summit and was instead in the US and it was actually the Israeli ambassador to the US, Tom, that was not in attendance during the summit who said that Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency tipped off the US about an alleged plot to kill former President Donald Trump.
According to Israeli media, a Western intelligence service initially broke the news; however, Israeli Ambassador to the US, Tomer Zvik’s predecessor Tom, did confirm that it was indeed Mossad that provided the intelligence. The claim suggests that a “very specific plot” against Trump while he was visiting Ankara for the NATO summit was uncovered.
Trump took the warning seriously, reportedly changing his mode of transportation back to the US. He traveled on Air Force One instead of a plane gifted by Qatar, which was an aircraft used for previous presidential visits to the Middle East. Trump used the opportunity to publicly express his concerns about the alleged plot, stating, “They want to bring me down. I saw this morning I was on every list.”
In light of this revelation, the US military issued a stern warning that they would take decisive action against Iran if anything were to happen to Trump. Turkey, meanwhile, quietly investigated the intelligence in Ankara during the NATO summit, but no concrete evidence was found to corroborate the tip. Iran chose not to deny the allegations, and the resulting silence in Tehran was seen as tacit confirmation in Washington.
This move has raised eyebrows, particularly in regards to the timing of Khamenei’s funeral, during which no one from the Iranian government was in a position to issue a denial. Many suspect that the plot may have been fabricated to give Trump leverage to reinitiate strikes against Iran, suppress domestic voices opposing the conflict, and improve his negotiating position vis-à-vis Iran.
In this scenario, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could face opposition from the US administration, particularly from the Democrats, who have been pushing for negotiations with Iran to prevent further conflict in the region. The potential impact of any new agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains to be seen, but one thing is clear – the US-Iran tensions have taken a significant turn upwards.
