IRAQ CONFRONTATION: Iran-Backed Militias Launch Over 600 Attacks on US Interests

The Pentagon has released a report indicating a significant escalation in the number of attacks on US citizens and facilities in Iraq by Iran-aligned militias between February and April 2026. According to figures provided by the Department of Defense, these militias were responsible for more than 600 attacks on the period spanning just three months.

These statistics reveal an alarming trend and highlight the fragile security environment in Iraq, where sectarian tensions remain high and external interference exacerbates already delicate regional dynamics. The Iran-aligned militias, which have increasingly been at odds with US military operations in the country, appear to be taking an even more aggressive stance.

As of now, the Pentagon has confirmed that more than 90 percent of the reported incidents were carried out by groups believed to be connected to Iran. These groups view US military presence in the region as unwelcome and perceive US forces as a threat to their territorial and strategic interests. According to US defense analysts, these attacks may be part of Iran’s broader efforts to test the limits of US resolve and force in the region.

In recent weeks, the frequency and intensity of rocket and mortar attacks against US-controlled military bases in Iraq have significantly increased. On multiple occasions, US service members have escaped injury due to the precision and alertness of security protocols, although some civilians have suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

US officials have thus far attributed these attacks to groups believed to be under Iran’s command or control, citing evidence such as the trajectory and payload of the explosive projectiles. The Iranian government has thus far denied involvement in these incidents, instead emphasizing its commitment to maintaining regional stability and security.

Against this backdrop, US officials remain committed to protecting American servicemen and women stationed in Iraq while pursuing diplomatic channels to ease tensions with neighboring nations. Pentagon spokespersons have emphasized that the US would hold those responsible for these attacks accountable. The current situation remains highly volatile and sensitive, with a potential for further escalation as various actors maneuver for leverage.
