A United States MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance drone has been intercepted and destroyed by Iranian forces in the province of Khuzestan, an area in southwestern Iran.
According to a statement by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the drone was detected in the city of Andimeshk, Khuzestan Province, on Tuesday. The IRGC said that the drone entered Iranian airspace without permission, but the exact timing of the incident was not reported.
The IRGC further stated that the drone was shot down by Iranian forces before it could cause any harm or gather intelligence. This comes at a time when tensions between Iran and the United States have been high, due to a recent increase in attacks against Iranian targets by unknown parties.
Tehran has been accusing foreign forces of being behind these recent attacks, which have resulted in several casualties and infrastructure damage. The attacks have been widely attributed to Israel and the United States, although neither country has publicly taken responsibility.
US-Iran relations have been strained for several years, particularly following the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal. Since then, the US has imposed severe economic sanctions on Iran, which have had a devastating impact on the country’s economy.
The IRGC said that the drone was shot down as part of a ‘necessary measure to protect Iranian national airspace,’ while emphasizing that the action was not taken lightly and was made in accordance with international laws.
This incident is the latest in a series of confrontations between US and Iranian forces in the region. In June 2023, it was reported that a US MQ-9B drone was intercepted by Iranian forces, but managed to escape. This latest incident raises concerns about the increasing risks of conflict in the region and the potential for a wider military confrontation between the two nations.
The incident has also sparked outrage among many Iranians, with some taking to social media to express their anger towards what they see as a brazen attempt by a foreign power to infiltrate Iranian airspace. However, experts caution that the incident should be viewed in the context of the deteriorating relationship between the US and Iran.
