On Wednesday, social media reports claimed that Israel had carried out a surprise air attack against a location in Nabatieh Al Fawqa, located approximately 85 kilometers south of Beirut. The reports caused widespread panic in the local community, with many residents quickly taking to social media to express concern and outrage.
However, the Lebanese government immediately denied the claims, and an official release from the state-run National News Agency (NNA) stated that the situation was entirely under control. A spokesperson for the government further clarified that intelligence services closely monitored the border region and had found no credible evidence of any military activity.
Social media user @wfwitness, among others, had claimed on Twitter that an Israeli airstrike had occurred on Nabatieh Al Fawqa. However, following an investigation, NNA officials determined that these reports were entirely false.
The Israeli military also denied any involvement in an airstrike on Tuesday, stating that all military operations are thoroughly coordinated and publicized in accordance with national security policy. In light of this information, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, confirmed the lack of any such airstrikes.
Nabatieh Al Fawqa, home to a large and tight-knit community, is a predominantly Shia-Muslim town in southern Lebanon. Local residents expressed relief that the situation was under control and that there were no fatalities or injuries.
An NNA spokesperson praised the efforts of local authorities and security services for their swift response to the situation and ability to effectively manage public information. “The public’s trust in our authorities and our government is of paramount importance to our mission, and we will continue to address any concerns and misconceptions as they arise,” the spokesperson added.
