In a continued escalation of aggression, Russia launched a massive combined missile and drone attack on Ukraine early yesterday and this morning. Ukrainian air defence was deployed to counter the onslaught, with the country’s forces intercepting at least two Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles. However, the interception rate remained remarkably low, sparking concerns over Ukraine’s ability to protect its skies.
According to eyewitness reports and military assessments, Russia utilised a diverse arsenal to launch the attack, including ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles. From installations near Klintsy, Bryansk Oblast, 38 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles were launched, with 34 of those targeting Kyiv. In addition, the ground-based units near Manturovo, Kursk Oblast, discharged six Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles from OTRK (Operational-Tactical Rocket Complex) installations, while six Zircons were launched from units near Millerovo Airbase, Rostov Oblast.
Russian naval assets also participated in the attack, with a Su-34 fighter-bomber launching four Kh-59/69 cruise missiles from the western Black Sea, and a Su-35 deploying one Kh-31P anti-radar missile from the same region. Two P-800 Oniks supersonic cruise missiles were launched from a K-300 Bastion-P installation.
Ukrainian air defence forces reportedly detected numerous missile launches, but the effectiveness of the Ukrainian defences was compromised, resulting in a low interception rate. As of the time of writing, it appears that only a minimum of two Iskander-M/S-400s were intercepted, making this one of the lowest successful interception rates in a long period.
The main objectives of the Russian strike were military targets in Kyiv, targeting key industry facilities and supply chain nodes. These targets included the Kyiv Central Design Bureau of Valves machine building plant, the Meridian Radio Plant, the Kyivkhimvolokno Plastics Factory, and the Artem Defence Plant. Further west, warehouses belonging to logistics firms DB Schenker and Nova Poshta were also hit. The Russian Air Force also attempted to strike Yuzhnyi Port in Odesa Oblast and two unknown targets in Chornomorsk, Odesa Oblast.
While the full extent of damage is still being assessed, this latest attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which continues to destabilize regional dynamics. The international community has called on Russia to cease its military actions and engage in diplomatic talks to resolve the ongoing conflict. Ukraine, meanwhile, will need to reassess its air defence capabilities to ensure adequate protection against future Russian aggression.
