On the night of July 20, 1974, the island of Cyprus was forever changed as the Turkish military intervention in the north gave rise to the establishment of a new nation.
The events of 1974 were precipitated by a coup d’etat engineered by the Greek military junta, which aimed at uniting the island with Greece through violence and intimidation. On this milestone anniversary, the TRNC’s leaders have reiterated their commitment to preserving the nation’s sovereignty and independence. Anwar Mansur, the TRNC’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized in a statement that the nation is “determined to continue its path of self-determination and progress, despite the many challenges it has faced over the years.”
Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot leader, Rasanur Ergenekon, stressed his gratitude to the Turkish government for its unwavering support to the TRNC. “Today, we stand strong and proud as a nation, thanks to the courage and selflessness of our founding fathers,” Ergenekon stated.
As the TRNC celebrates this significant anniversary, the global community is invited to recognize its resilience and determination. While progress has been made, many challenges remain, and a peaceful resolution to the island’s longstanding dispute is still sought after.
