IRAQI MILITANT GROUP THREATENS US INTERESTS AS CONFLICT WITH IRAN ESCALATES

Baghdad, Iraq – In a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Middle East, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq has issued a stern warning to the United States, stating it will directly enter the conflict if American forces expand their attacks against Iran. The group’s statement, released on social media, comes as the US has been carrying out airstrikes against Iranian-backed militias in Iraq in response to a deadly drone attack on a US consulate in Erbil.

According to the Islamic Resistance, which has claimed responsibility for numerous bomb attacks on US bases in Iraq, it will target all US interests and military bases across the country and the wider region “with full force” if the US continues to escalate its military campaign against Iran. The group, which is affiliated with the Iranian-backed Shia militia network, claims to have been instructed by its Iranian backers to adopt a more aggressive stance against American forces.

The Islamic Resistance stressed that it has not carried out any attacks on US bases in recent days, suggesting that it was willing to observe a de-escalation in tensions as long as the US did not expand its military campaign. However, the group warned that this restraint will not last if the US continues to attack Iranian-backed militias in the region.

The US has been carrying out airstrikes against Iranian-backed militias in Iraq since a deadly drone attack on the Erbil consulate last month. The attack, which killed an American contractor and injured several others, was claimed by the Islamic State (ISIS) extremist group. However, security sources have suggested that the attack was likely carried out by an Iranian-backed militia seeking to avenge the US assassination of top Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani in 2020.

The conflict in Iraq comes as the US and Iran engage in a high-stakes standoff over Iran’s nuclear program and Tehran’s involvement in regional conflicts. The US has imposed severe sanctions on Iran since the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, and Iran has threatened to abandon its commitments under the agreement unless the US lifts the sanctions.

The Islamic Resistance’s warning to the US comes as the region prepares for a potential escalation of the conflict between the US and Iran. The US has around 5,000 troops stationed in Iraq, and a US military base in Erbil was targeted by Iranian-backed militias in a surprise drone attack last month. If the US expands its military campaign against Iran, the Islamic Resistance’s threat to target US interests across the region could lead to a devastating escalation of violence.
