A recent assessment by current and former U.S. officials has revealed that the Iranian drone attack on the American Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 3 caused significantly more damage than initially reported by Saudi authorities. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the strike resulted in a substantial fire that lasted for around half a day, with the aftermath leaving some sections of the embassy beyond repair.
The attack started with two drones being launched by Iranian forces. The first drone successfully breached the air defenses protecting Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter before crashing into the embassy compound. Approximately one minute later, a second drone followed the same route, resulting in a massive explosion. This sequence of events left the secure section of the embassy, which would normally be occupied by hundreds of personnel during the day, severely damaged.
This section of the embassy, as stated by officials, was specifically targeted because it houses the CIA station, a critical component of U.S. operations in the region. The full scale of the damage inflicted during the attack highlights the sophistication and capability of Iranian drone technologies and capabilities.
Reports suggest that additional drones were intercepted later that night, but the remains landed dangerously close to a preschool. The second drone was even believed to have targeted the residence of the top U.S. diplomat nearby. The officials also expressed concern that had the attack occurred during working hours, the impact would have been catastrophic, resulting in numerous casualties among U.S. embassy staff and personnel.
These revelations underscore a concerning escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran. The incident’s significance was downplayed initially by Saudi authorities as ‘minor.’ It now appears that their assessment was far removed from the actual damage incurred by the attack.
The assessment of the attack and subsequent revelations have sent a clear signal to all parties involved that tensions remain elevated and further diplomatic efforts are required to avoid any potential military confrontation between the U.S. and Iran.
