Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has written a strongly worded letter to the United Nations Secretary-General and the Security Council, condemning repeated airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities by the United States and Israel. The letter, sent on Tuesday, detailed a series of attacks on major nuclear sites, including Natanz, the Bushehr plant, and the Shahid Ahmadi-Roshan uranium processing facility.
The letter specifically highlighted strikes on facilities near the active Bushehr reactor, warning that such aggressions pose a significant risk of a radiological release with catastrophic human and environmental consequences for the entire region. Araghchi emphasized that the international community should be aware of the dangers posed by these attacks and urged immediate action to prevent further incidents.
Araghchi also criticized Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), for making “dangerous” remarks suggesting the use of nuclear weapons against Iran. He accused the IAEA of inaction, arguing that the agency’s failure to condemn these attacks has emboldened Israel and the US to pursue further aggression.
Iran’s Foreign Minister warned that if attacks on safeguarded facilities continue to go unpunished, member states may lose confidence in the United Nations, the IAEA, and the non-proliferation regime. He emphasized that Iran is committed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and is working closely with the IAEA to implement its safeguards.
Iran has long accused the United States and Israel of seeking to undermine its nuclear program through covert operations and diplomatic pressure. The latest series of airstrikes has heightened tensions between the two parties, with many analysts warning of an escalating cycle of violence.
In response to the escalating situation, Araghchi has urged the international community to take a clear stance against these attacks and to condemn the use of force in pursuit of non-proliferation goals. He emphasized that any action against Iran must be based on a clear and evidence-based assessment of its nuclear activities, and that any punitive measures must be proportionate and in accordance with international law.
As tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel continue to rise, there are concerns that the international community may be on the brink of a major international crisis. The reaction of the Security Council and the international community will be closely watched in the coming days as they respond to Iran’s urgent warning of catastrophic consequences from unregulated airstrikes on nuclear facilities.
