TEHRAN/ISLAMABAD – Tensions in Iran-US nuclear negotiations escalated on Wednesday, after the Tasnim News Agency announced that all talks have been temporarily suspended. This decision, reportedly taken by the Iranian delegation, follows an announcement claiming that their team was en route to Islamabad for negotiations with Pakistani officials. However, according to Tasnim News Agency sources, this was not the case.
The suspension of talks between the United States and Iran comes amidst a disagreement over Washington’s commitment towards the 2006 UN Security Council Resolution 1701, concerning the ongoing conflict in Lebanon. Although Tehran and Washington had made significant progress in talks since 2021, the parties failed to reach a deal regarding the lifting of sanctions against Iran.
According to officials speaking to the Tasnim News Agency in Tehran, Iran’s nuclear negotiations team had reached Islamabad at the request of US officials. In return, Pakistan was expected to facilitate talks aimed at securing a more decisive US commitment towards Lebanon. However, after verifying information, the Iranian team allegedly discovered that this was not the case and subsequently announced the suspension of talks.
“The news that an Iranian delegation was arriving in Islamabad was absolutely false,” an official from the Tasnim News Agency stated, confirming the news suspension. “Iran has made its position clear: no negotiations can proceed before the United States delivers on its commitment to the UN Security Council Resolution regarding Lebanon.”
Although a source close to the negotiations mentioned an “unrealistic delay,” a US official in Washington stated that “discussions between the United States and Iran remain active,” while a US diplomatic team expressed a “commitment to reaching a breakthrough.”
However, analysts believe that any progress between the United States and Iran may be difficult to achieve without a clear US commitment on Lebanon. Iran and Hezbollah’s long-established alliance, with significant influence in Lebanese politics, further exacerbates the tension.
“This impasse underscores the complex diplomatic landscape surrounding Iran-US relations,” stated a Middle East analyst speaking on condition of anonymity. “While it is unclear when or if these talks will resume, it remains to be seen whether both parties can come to a mutually agreeable solution that addresses their respective demands and regional security concerns.”
For now, the status quo remains, as the nuclear talks are indefinitely postponed. It remains too early to speculate on when or if Iran-US relations will move forward.
