Tensions between Iran and the United States have been escalating in recent weeks, with the Iranian government issuing a stern warning in response to potential US strikes on critical infrastructure. According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Saeed Khatibzadeh’s, deputy, Seyed Baqaei, the country’s armed forces have been instructed to react with force in the event of an attack on their critical infrastructure.
“In case Iran’s infrastructure is attacked, we would react in kind,” Baqaei stated in a public statement released Monday. He clarified that this response would specifically target any US-owned or related infrastructure that contributes to the aggression against Iran.
Iran’s threat comes as the US has been reportedly considering military action against Iran’s nuclear program, which Washington views as a major security threat. Meanwhile, Tehran maintains that its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes, such as energy generation and medical research.
The escalating rhetoric between the two nations has raised concerns among international observers, who fear that a miscalculation could lead to a devastating conflict in the volatile Middle East region.
Analysts note that Iran’s warning should be taken seriously, given the country’s history of retaliatory strikes against perceived aggressors. In 2020, Iran launched a missile attack against US military bases in Iraq in response to a US drone strike that killed top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani.
“This is not an empty threat from Iran,” said Dr. Hamidreza Azizi, a regional security expert based in Tehran. “Iran’s armed forces have made it clear that they would retaliate in kind against any attack on their critical infrastructure. The US should carefully consider this warning and weigh the potential consequences of taking military action against Iran.”
The latest escalation of tensions between Iran and the US comes as the Biden administration is seeking to re-enter the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a 2015 nuclear agreement that imposed limits on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief from international economic sanctions. However, the prospects of reviving the deal remain uncertain due to Iran’s current stance on uranium enrichment and other contentious issues.
The international community will be closely watching developments in the coming weeks as the situation between Iran and the US continues to unfold.
