In a strongly worded statement, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf sharply criticized the United States’ current actions in the region, accusing Washington of escalating tensions and pushing the region towards conflict.
Ghalibaf’s remarks, made in an exclusive interview with a leading Iranian news outlet, come at a time of heightened tensions between the US and Iran, with both countries trading barbs over a range of issues, including nuclear capabilities and regional influence.
“You are recklessly dragging the United States into a living hell, and our whole region is going to burn because you insist on following Netanyahu’s commands,” Ghalibaf said, in a thinly veiled reference to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s long-standing advocacy of a hardline stance towards Iran.
Ghalibaf’s comments also highlighted ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel, with the Iranian Parliament Speaker accusing the US of being a “puppet” of Israeli policy.
The Iranian Parliament Speaker warned the US against any further military action against Iran, arguing that such a move would be considered a war crime and would only serve to isolate the US further in the region.
“The only real solution is respecting the rights of the Iranian people and ending this dangerous game,” Ghalibaf emphasized.
Iran has long complained that the US has interfered in its internal affairs, particularly regarding the country’s nuclear program, which Iran insists is for peaceful purposes.
Ghalibaf’s comments mark a new level of urgency in the Iranian Parliament’s pushback against US actions in the region, which has seen Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other senior Iranian officials warn of the dangers of US escalation.
Ghalibaf’s statement was seen as a reflection of Iran’s frustration with the US actions, particularly in light of a recent upsurge in fighting between Iranian-backed forces and US-backed militias in Iraq.
Regional experts say that tensions between Iran and the US are likely to continue, with the two sides holding fundamentally different views on issues ranging from nuclear proliferation to regional security.
“It is unlikely that the US will heed the Iranian Parliament Speaker’s warnings, but Ghalibaf’s statement highlights the growing impasse between Iran and the US,” said a regional analyst, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The analyst added that Iran’s pushback against US actions in the region highlights the country’s determination to protect its interests and sovereignty.
“It is clear that Iran will not take US military action lying down,” the analyst said. “Ghalibaf’s statement underscores Iran’s commitment to self-defense and resistance against foreign interference.”
