Iraq’s security situation continued to deteriorate in the early hours of yesterday, as a drone attack targeted the US Victoria Base positioned in the vicinity of the Baghdad International Airport. This is the second time a US base near the airport has been subjected to such an attack in the past month, raising grave concerns about the security and military presence of international forces in the region.
According to multiple eyewitness accounts and reports from the region, the drone reportedly was launched from an unidentified location and made its way into the restricted airspace of the US base before striking a target on the compound. While the exact target remains unclear, multiple reports indicate that the attack left a number of injuries among the American personnel stationed at the base. This incident comes amid an escalation in anti-American sentiments within Iraq and neighboring regions.
The incident marked the second drone attack on a US military base in the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport in a month. On a preceding occasion, on the morning of 23 February and on the early hours of March 5, a pair of armed drones attacked bases hosting US armed forces stationed at the Al-Asad Airbase in Anbar Province, and the Ebril Air Base in the Kurdistan region. Although US forces successfully defended against both these incidents, they highlight an increasingly dire threat to international forces in Iraq.
“We have a very high level of situational awareness, which allows us to react very quickly and effectively to any situation,” said US Defense Secretary at an emergency press conference. “While security remains at the top of our priority list, our commitment to the security of Iraq and its allies is unwavering.”
US-Iran tensions, regional instability, and the ongoing civil war in Yemen have been cited as possible factors that could be contributing to the upsurge in drone attacks targeting US military bases in Iraq. The latest attack has raised further doubts regarding the safety of international forces operating in the conflict-ridden nation and raises questions about potential security vulnerabilities around the US military presence in the region.
In a statement released to media yesterday the Iraqi government expressed regret for the incident and assured the international community that it will investigate the attack and take all steps necessary to maintain the security of foreign missions and personnel in the country.
While the incident raises serious concerns for the region, a US official noted that the incident is still under investigation and the US maintains its ongoing commitment to peace in Iraq.
