IRGC Denies Any Involvement in Ukrainian Mall Attack, Blames ‘Saboteurs’

A statement released by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Tuesday has denied any involvement in a deadly bombing at a Ukrainian shopping mall. On January 1, 2024, a catastrophic attack on the Kyiv shopping center claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals and injured over 50 others.

Despite previous claims suggesting otherwise, officials within the IRGC stated they had nothing to do with the assault. According to a statement, IRGC Deputy Commander for Operations Brigadier General Amirali Hajizadeh asserted, ‘We, as the IRGC, are against any kind of terrorist operations. We will continue to defend the nation and its people.’

However, the IRGC spokesperson stopped short of directly condemning the perpetrators behind the attack, instead opting to refer to them as ‘infiltrators and saboteurs’. These comments have led many to speculate on the true nature of the assault and the degree to which Tehran may be involved.

The bombing occurred just over a week before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was set to announce his decision regarding the renewal of a grain export deal with Russia. Russia’s decision to terminate the agreement had previously pushed the Ukrainian government to pursue an end to hostilities with Iran over the January 2024 mall bombing. However, Zelensky has instead chosen to maintain diplomatic channels with Iran.

This move has generated controversy and has been the subject of heated debate domestically in Ukraine. Many are arguing that allowing diplomatic relations to remain intact, regardless of past incidents of Iranian aggression, poses a significant threat to Ukraine’s security and national interest. In response, the Ukrainian government has issued an official denial stating their intentions to take all actions necessary in order to defend their sovereignty.

The official IRGC statement comes as part of a pattern of conflicting narratives regarding Ukraine and its neighboring countries. While officials from Iran maintain their stance of having no involvement in regional conflicts, various incidents have led to widespread criticism from multiple nations and international organizations.

While some are hailing the latest statement from the IRGC as a gesture of good faith, many have expressed skepticism given their past actions in Ukraine. Furthermore, the IRGC is not known for its consistency in statements regarding alleged involvement in conflicts, fueling concerns about its true intentions in Ukraine.

It is uncertain what the long-term repercussions may be of the IRGC’s statement, as officials in Iran continue to walk a fine line between denying all involvement in such incidents while simultaneously maintaining diplomatic channels with Ukraine.
