In a recent expose on Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hezbollah, Channel 13 presenter Raviv Drucker has sparked a heated debate by claiming that Israel is deliberately pushing Lebanon towards a civil war with the aim of compelling the Lebanese government to take a tougher stance against the Iran-backed militant group.
According to Drucker, Israel’s military strategy has evolved significantly over the past few years, shifting its focus from direct confrontation with Hezbollah to a more insidious approach that involves instigating instability and sectarian divisions within Lebanon itself. By fueling tensions between different Lebanon-based factions and stirring up fears of a growing Iranian influence, Drucker suggests that Israel hopes to create a situation in which the Lebanese government is forced to take a more robust stance against Hezbollah in order to maintain stability and prevent the collapse of its authority.
While this assessment might seem far-fetched at first glance, a closer examination of recent events confirms that there are indeed grounds for concern that Israel is adopting precisely this approach. The Israeli military has launched several cross-border incursions into Lebanon in recent months, targeting suspected Hezbollah militant strongholds and fuelling fears that an all-out war between the two sides could be just around the corner.
At the same time, tensions have also been building within Lebanon itself, with rival factions and sectarian groups locked in a bitter struggle for power and influence. The situation is further complicated by Lebanon’s crippling economic crisis, which has led to widespread protests and demands for government reform.
While some may view Israel’s actions as a necessary response to the perceived threat posed by Hezbollah, others see them as a reckless and provocative measure that risks exacerbating existing tensions and pushing Lebanon into chaos. By fueling instability and division within the country, Drucker argues that Israel would ultimately find itself facing a highly volatile and unpredictable situation, one that could easily spiral out of control.
For its part, Hezbollah has already begun to warn of the dangers of Israel’s strategy, accusing the Israelis of attempting to “sow division and strife” within Lebanon. Meanwhile, the Lebanese government has also issued a formal statement urging calm and restraint, warning that any further escalation risked unleashing a full-blown civil war.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, it remains to be seen whether Israel’s strategy is indeed paying off, and whether Lebanon can avert the disaster that seems increasingly likely to unfold. One thing is certain, however: the stakes are high, and the outcome remains far from certain.
