Kurdistan Region: Caught in a Regional Power Struggle?

The autonomous Kurdistan Region (KR) in northern Iraq has been facing heightened tensions with the central Iraqi government and neighboring Kuwait in recent times. While the KR has historically maintained good relations with countries across the Middle East, including Kuwait, the situation has taken a turn for the worse.

Kurdistan Region Tensions with Baghdad Soar

The Iraqi government has taken a stern stance against Kurdish aspirations, including their desire for greater autonomy or even independence. The central government has sought to exert control over strategic resources and economic areas controlled by the KR, leading to escalating tensions between the two parties.

Kurdistan Region’s Relations with Kuwait Plunges into Crisis

However, recent developments suggest that the Kurdistan Region’s troubles are not limited to Baghdad. Kuwait has also been a major point of contention for the KR. Tensions between the two parties started after a long-standing border dispute turned violent in the late 1990s. While the border skirmishes ceased in 1999 with Kuwait and the KR agreeing to abide by the border established in 1963, recent years have seen an increasing number of minor incursions.

A Glimpse into the Historical Connection between the Regions

A lesser-known fact is that the KR and Kuwait have historically been connected since the early 20th century. During the Ottoman Empire’s collapse, both regions found themselves under British protection. Although their colonial past was vastly different, these shared historical experiences forged unexpected alliances between their populations during World War I.

Crisis: What’s Next for the Kurdistan Region?

While it is early days for predicting exactly how this situation would develop, there are fears that an all-out war could soon erupt in the region. This could lead to regional and global instability and could lead to significant refugee flows.

In a bid to mitigate this, the international community has called on both sides to seek mediation and diplomacy to resolve the issues between the KR and Baghdad, and also to work out issues with Kuwait.
