A Decline in National Pride
As the United States celebrates its 247th birthday, a growing number of Americans are expressing feelings of disillusionment and frustration with their country. A recent survey conducted by Gallup revealed that patriotism in America has reached a four-year low.
Only 42% of Americans Identify as “Proud to Be Americans”
The survey, which polled over 1,000 Americans in February, found that the percentage of people who identify as “proud to be Americans” has been steadily declining since 2020. This number has dropped from 58% at the height of Donald Trump’s presidency to its current low of 42%.
According to Gallup, the decline in patriotism can be attributed to a number of factors, including increasing economic inequality, racial and social tensions, and a growing sense of distrust in government and institutions. The survey also found that Democrats were significantly less likely to identify as “proud to be Americans,” with only 34% expressing pride in their country.
A Generation Gap in Patriotism
The survey also revealed a significant generational gap in patriotism. Younger Americans, specifically those born between 1997 and 2012, were less likely to express pride in their country. In contrast, older Americans, particularly those born between 1946 and 1964, were more likely to identify as “proud to be Americans.”
Increasing Polarization and Divisiveness
The findings of the survey are not surprising, given the increasing polarization and divisiveness in American society. A number of high-profile events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, racial unrest, and the 2020 presidential election, have contributed to a growing sense of disillusionment and discontent among Americans.
A Call to Action for Policymakers
The decline in patriotism in America is a concerning trend that policymakers should take seriously. By addressing the underlying issues that are driving this decline, such as economic inequality and social injustice, policymakers can help restore a sense of national pride and unity among Americans.
