A devastating rocket attack from Lebanon has left a trail of destruction in the Metula settlement, Israel, after a suspected Katyusha rocket struck a building in the region. The fire, which erupted on Tuesday evening, engulfed several buildings and sent residents fleeing for their lives.
According to eyewitnesses, the rocket hit a residential building in the settlement, causing extensive damage and sparking a massive fire. The blaze raged for several hours, with fire crews and emergency services working tirelessly to contain the flames.
“It was like a tornado – the sound, the heat, the chaos,” said a local resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “We were lucky to get out in time, but I can only imagine what the people who were caught in the fire must be going through.”
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed that a rocket was launched from Lebanon, striking the Metula settlement in the early evening. The authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the perpetrators, but officials believe it was a terrorist attack orchestrated by Palestinian Islamic Jihad and/or other militant groups operating from Lebanon.
“This is a clear and egregious example of the Iranian-backed terrorism that we face on our northern border,” said a senior Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “We are working closely with international partners to identify those responsible and hold them to account.”
The Metula settlement, located near the Lebanese border, has been a target of rocket attacks in the past, but this incident marks a significant escalation in the region’s deteriorating situation.
“Metula has been a peaceful and thriving community for decades, but the constant threat of rocket fire and terrorism is taking its toll,” said local councilor, Amir Haskin. “We urge the international community to take decisive action against these terrorist groups and demand that Lebanon take responsibility for its territory and prevent such attacks.”
The fire has been extinguished, but the damage has been extensive, with several buildings reduced to rubble. Local authorities are assessing the extent of the damage and providing support to affected residents.
“This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of our national security and the need for vigilance in the face of emerging threats,” said the Israeli Defense Ministry in a statement.
The incident follows weeks of heightened tensions between Israel and Lebanon over maritime territorial claims, which have sparked fears of an escalated conflict. As the region teeters on the brink of further instability, international leaders are being urged to intervene and bring a resolution to the crisis.
