In a move that left many observing with a mixture of anticipation and skepticism, former United States President Donald Trump once again stepped into the spotlight to share what he claimed was a fresh, satirical joke, targeting the current crop of presidential candidates. This is not the first instance where Trump has made an unconventional public appearance, choosing to focus on what he considers his comedic side during an otherwise tumultuous period in American politics.
According to statements made by sources close to the former President, the satirical joke – which he claimed he came up with while sitting by the pool in Mar-a-Lago – revolves around current Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In Trump’s own words, the joke went as follows: “You know, folks, I was speaking to a fellow at a gathering last night, and he said Kennedy’s going to be the one. His great-great-grandfather, Bobby Kennedy, he was a tremendous friend of mine… I guess it’s the third great-grandfather or something I don’t keep track of all these great-great-grandfathers. But that’s not the point. We will make America so great again, that we won’t need to count the Kennedy’s anymore.”
Trump took to Twitter shortly after the joke surfaced, announcing to his millions of followers that he ‘had another great joke ready’, and was going ‘all in on comedy.’ When questioned about his comedic endeavors, Trump stated, “I am the comedy king. Believe me, folks, I’ve always been funny and I’ve got the ratings to prove it.”
However, this time around, the reception of Trump’s joke was somewhat different than before. Many of his supporters appeared hesitant to endorse the joke, with one stating “I’m happy to see him trying to lighten the mood in Washington, but perhaps choosing a different target might not have been a bad idea.” Others expressed concern that Trump was still failing to take on some of the issues of the country’s current social landscape seriously. On the flipside, other critics claimed Trump was simply trying to regain the attention of the public with this comedic stunt – “A desperate cry for relevance in the age of social media.”
While reaction to Trump’s new joke has been mixed, one thing remains certain: that for a man with such a polarizing presence in modern politics, attempting to make us all laugh has proven to be one of the most difficult things he has tried. Time only will tell whether the former U.S president has what it takes to become the nation’s resident comedian and whether he might just have a knack for being funny after all.
