U.S. Helicopter Reportedly Targeted by Iranian Fire During Search and Rescue Effort Over Iran

A tense situation has unfolded in the skies over Iran as the Iranian Mehr News Agency claims that a U.S. helicopter was hit by an Iranian projectile during a search and rescue operation for the pilot of a downed fighter jet.

According to reports from the Iranian news agency, the incident occurred as U.S. military personnel were attempting to locate and recover the pilot of a F-4E Phantom II that had crashed in the country. Iranian forces allegedly fired at the U.S. helicopter in an effort to thwart the search and rescue operation.

A spokesperson for CENTCOM has since confirmed that a U.S. helicopter was damaged during a mission to find the downed pilot. However, they failed to specify the type of aircraft involved and whether any personnel were injured.

It remains unclear at present whether the reported projectile fire was a warning shot or an attempt to actually destroy the U.S. helicopter. Nonetheless, the presence of a projectile in the vicinity of the U.S. aircraft is likely to be the subject of an inquiry by both sides.

Tensions have long simmered between the United States and Iran following the assassination of top Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani in January 2020. The U.S. military has also reportedly conducted covert operations within the country against Iranian-backed forces. The downed F-4E Phantom II, however, is a development that appears to be an unintended occurrence.

Iran’s defense minister, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Ashtian, has accused the U.S. of using the downed pilot’s location to carry out a stealthy reconnaissance operation over the country. The Iranian military, he added, would pursue any foreign aircraft that entered the country’s airspace in the same way.

The reported incident has raised concerns of a heightened state of alert from the U.S. and potentially other countries operating in the region.

U.S. and Iranian officials seem increasingly wary of each other, with this incident being yet another test case for their ongoing tensions.
